Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to computer systems designed to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence — things like understanding language, recognizing images, making decisions, and solving complex problems.
At its core, most modern AI works through a process called machine learning. Instead of being programmed with explicit rules, an AI system is given massive amounts of data and learns patterns from it. For example, to teach an AI to recognize cats, you'd feed it millions of cat images. Over time, the system adjusts internal mathematical values — called weights — until it can correctly identify cats on its own.
Deep learning — the technology behind tools like ChatGPT and image generators — uses artificial "neural networks" modeled loosely on the human brain. These networks have billions of parameters that are tuned during training to make accurate predictions or generate realistic outputs.
When you interact with an AI chatbot, the system doesn't "think" the way humans do. It predicts the most statistically likely next word or response based on everything it learned during training. It's extraordinarily good at this — but it has no true understanding, emotions, or consciousness.
Technology
Sleep is far more than rest — it's when your body carries out some of its most critical maintenance work. Adults generally need 7–9 hours per night, and this isn't just a recommendation; it's a biological requirement built into how our bodies function.
During sleep, your brain actively clears out waste products (including proteins linked to Alzheimer's disease) through a system called the glymphatic network. Your immune system strengthens, tissues repair themselves, and memories formed during the day are consolidated into long-term storage. Growth hormone — essential for both children and adults — is primarily released during deep sleep.
Short-term sleep deprivation causes reduced concentration, mood swings, slower reaction times, and impaired decision-making. Even one night of poor sleep can reduce cognitive performance similarly to being legally drunk.
Chronic sleep deprivation (regularly getting fewer than 6 hours) is linked to serious long-term risks: obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, weakened immunity, depression, and a significantly shorter lifespan. Studies show that people who consistently sleep fewer than 6 hours per night have a 12% higher risk of dying prematurely compared to those who sleep 7–8 hours.
The quality of sleep matters as much as quantity. Avoiding screens before bed, keeping a consistent sleep schedule, and sleeping in a dark, cool room are among the most evidence-backed ways to improve sleep quality.
Economic boom-and-bust cycles — also called business cycles — are a recurring pattern in market economies where periods of strong growth (booms) are followed by slowdowns or contractions (recessions). Understanding why they happen requires looking at both human behavior and systemic forces.
During a boom, optimism drives businesses to invest, consumers to spend, and banks to lend generously. Asset prices (stocks, real estate) rise. But this creates the conditions for a bust: over-investment leads to excess supply, rising prices squeeze consumers, debt levels become unsustainable, and eventually confidence breaks. When enough people pull back at once, the contraction becomes self-reinforcing.
Key triggers vary by cycle — the 2008 crash was driven by a housing bubble and risky mortgage lending; the 2020 recession was triggered by a global pandemic. But the underlying amplifier is usually the same: too much debt and misallocated investment built up during the good times.
Can they be prevented? Most economists say: softened, but not eliminated. Governments use two main tools — fiscal policy (spending and taxes) and monetary policy (interest rates set by central banks) — to stabilize the economy. Lowering interest rates during downturns makes borrowing cheaper and encourages spending. Stimulus packages inject money directly into the economy.However, these tools have limits. Interest rates can't go below zero (easily), and government stimulus can add to public debt. Some economists argue that trying too hard to prevent busts actually makes future ones worse, by encouraging excessive risk-taking during the boom — a concept called moral hazard.
